A federal program offering loan forgiveness for college graduates working in public or nonprofit sectors may be on the chopping block in the soon-to-be-released Trump administration budget.

The program, created by the George W. Bush administration to encourage more people to go into public service, offers loan forgiveness to doctors working in rural areas.

Under the new budget proposal, funding for college work-study programs would be cut in half, public-service loan forgiveness would end and hundreds of millions of dollars earmarked for public school services would be eliminated to cut $10.6 billion from federal education initiatives.
