A Delaware woman who lived by herself in a rural setting was exposed to rabies in July and died from it in August. The last known person to die of rabies in Delaware was a 4-year-old boy in 1941.

The same week the woman was exposed, the state restored funding to the Office of Animal Welfare for its rabies program, after lawmakers cut it out for a year.

Officials don’t know how the Kent County woman was exposed to the disease.
