The state of Hawaii will build a new 144-bed forensic psychiatric facility to help ease overcrowding at the Windward Oahu campus. Site work is scheduled to start in March on the five-acre site in Kaneohe and will be completed in the summer.

The state hospital was built for 178 patients, but has had a census of more than 200 patients ordered by the courts to evaluations, care and custody. The state also contracts for 40 beds at the nonprofit Kahi Mohala mental health facility in Ewa Beach.
